HOCKLEY GOLF CLUB CENTENARY 2014

UPDATE ON ACTIVITIES - 26th October 2012

Further to previous circulations and consultations this seemed to be an appropriate moment to update the Membership on your Centenary Committee’s plans for the celebrations in 2014. There is a section on the notice boards in the foyer dedicated to news of events and more detailed information as we go through 2013, in addition to this section on the Club website for comment and suggestions.

One of the first items that had to be confirmed was the date of our Centenary – it has proved difficult to confirm the reports from the early days because a local businessman built the course on his own land as a gift to his wife, who was a keen golfer!

The centrepiece for the golfing calendar will be a Centenary week in June (14-22nd) where there will be number of events for members and guests, including Invitation days, Club invitations, and Captains’ Days.

Then, during the season, there will be Centenary Medals for all categories and a day when the Club will combine with Winchester College for golf followed by a dinner; additional Centenary specific events will be held, but all of these will fit in with the existing fixture list, so there should be no concerns over excessive tee bookings on the course.

During the year Hockley will also host the Men’s County Championship (6-8th June) and the Hampshire & IOW & CI Ladies Autumn Meeting, both of which will give the opportunity to show off the renewed quality of the course and Club. There are a number of other events currently being explored and a full schedule will be published when the programme has been finalised and agreed.

On the social front it is hoped that members will support the golfing events and the after golf activities.

A Golf Dinner is proposed for a date in February (21st) in the Clubhouse to get the celebrations underway and a Grand Centenary Ball is planned for 30th August 2014 in a marquee attached to the Clubhouse with a variety of added entertainment. Both the Dinner and the Ball will be events that your committee hope will be well supported in this special year.

It has been a difficult time for raising funds for the Centenary, but plans are in place for something permanent to mark the 100 years and, again, details of this will be published when finalised.

Mementoes for members and visitors are also part of the programme, together with Centenary related prizes for golfing excellence. A History of Hockley is being prepared and will be available in the form of hard copies in the Clubhouse; should individual members want their own copy this will be available in electronic form on request.

The programme continues to evolve and interest from members who would like to be involved with the programme will always be welcomed. We are looking forward to a special year of fun and celebrations.
