Course availability and access
(Please Press the 'Refresh' button on your Web Browser to ensure that you have the
latest version of this web page.)
Update as at May 2008
In most normal circumstances the full course is open, and this is expected to be the norm for
the forseeable future. Full greens on all holes other than the 10th are in play, though this is expected to
be in play by May 10th. (Choose 'Current and forecast access' from the options below.
Please see Policy below for general principles
If you need an up to date position on access, please ring the Club on 01962 713165 and press option 2 to get an update.
Winter Rules
Winter rules have now been removed, and Green Tees are now in position.
Policy
Availability
Whilst every effort will be made to keep the course open, in the event of extreme weather conditions there may
be circumstances when it becomes necessary to close the course, either for a short period or for the whole day.
Please see general principles below for details.
Use of Trolleys in Winter
The policy for winter use of trolleys is that "In the event of a white
frost the starting hole
will be moved from the 1st Hole up to 18a. Trolleys will be allowed in this situation, but players are then requested to take their
trolleys up the left hand side of the 2nd fairway (using either the greenkeepers track or the rough) in order to progress to the
third fairway.
Whilst every attempt will be made to adhere to this policy, members should recognise that there may
still be occasions when weather conditions are such that permission for trolleys has to be
removed - however, overall this should reduce any inconvenience to members.
Members can ring the Club (on 01962 713165) and choose the option which goes through to the Greenkeepers answerphone for an early
morning update if this is a possibility.
Local weather forecasts
Select a weather forecast for the Winchester area from the following list:
Summary of current and forecast access
The course is OPEN.
The full course - other than the 10th hole - is in play. Depending upon circumstances, EITHER
the temporary green on the 10th hole will be in play, OR 18a will be used as a replacement. Please check the notices at the course
on the day that you play. This hole is expected to be brought into play by 10th May.
Winter Rules have now been removed.
- Motorized trolleys are allowed.
- Pull trolleys are allowed.
- Buggies are allowed.
The expectation is that all trolleys and buggies will be permitted from now until at least late Autumn 2008, but in the
event of a late spring 'white frost' then members will be expected to use the semi-rough to walk and pull
trolleys through as they make their way to the 1st green.
Please ring the Club (on 01962 713165) and choose the option which goes through to the Greenkeepers
answerphone for an early morning update in the event of any significant change in the weather.
For information, the general principles that are adopted are that in the event of:
- Heavy snow
- The course will be closed.
- Overnight frosts from Spring onwards
- The 1st starting hole will continue as usual, but members are requested to use the semi-rough
to move toward the 1st green until the frost has gone. Trolleys will continue to be permitted
- Heavy fog
- The course will be closed until any fog disperses and it is safe to play.
- Heavy rain
- Normally the course is free-draining - however, in the event of sustained and torrential
rainfall the greens can flood and become unplayable. It normally takes 3 hours for the greens to drain - but if the ground
is already saturated then this period increases. In severe cases the course will be closed.
(As always, a final decision will be made first thing on the morning in question and
in the light of actual weather). In the event of particularly inclement weather you should ring the
Pro Shop if you need confirmation as to current permissions, or alternatively, members can ring the Club
(on 01962 713165) and choose the option which goes through to the Greenkeepers answerphone for an early
morning update.
Information regarding 'Play' on the course
As an experiment, on the 2nd hole, and
if circumstances allow it, please try to allow players
behind to play their second shots to the green. i.e.
when the group that you are playing with are all on
the green look to see if the group behind are ready
to play their 2nd shots - if they are, please call
them up. After they have played their second shots,
please finish the hole as normal and exit to the 3rd
tee.
